• Transcription should be clean read or  intelligent verbatim. This means that the transcript is edited to remove any fillers/verbal tics, false starts, repeated words, and other speech/sounds irrelevant to the transcript.
  • Keep paragraphs short.
  • Use one space after a period.
  • Skip false starts and stutters.
  • Omit verbal tics such as "you know," "like," "um," "uh," et cetera.
  • Don't transcribe thinking noises (if someone is just saying uh-hmm, right, okay, yeah as someone else is talking).
  • Slang forms such as "gonna," "wanna," "gotta," "alright,"  "coz," et cetera should NOT be used. Instead, use "going to," "want to," "got to," "all right," "because," et cetera.
  • Yeah and yup are accepted.
  • Use "okay" instead of "OK."
  • Do not expand words when dictated as a contraction. (eg. If the speaker says "haven't," do not transcribe it as "have not.")
  • Spell out numbers zero to ten.
  • Inaudible/Indiscernible sections should be marked with a blank ___ (three underscores).
  • Check spelling and punctuation.
  • For interruptions and change of thought, use two hyphens (--).
  • For suspended sentences, use ellipsis (...).
  • For multiple speakers, identify the speakers by first name. If you can't identify the speakers, use S1, S2, et cetera.
  • Use straight quotes not smart quotes.
  • Save the transcript in .doc format (not .docx).
